Canmore is a town in Alberta, Canada. It is located in Kananaskis Country in the Rocky Mountains, about 80 kilometres (50 mi) west of Calgary at an elevation of 1,460 metres (4,790 ft). Canmore is a popular tourist destination for outdoor activities such as hiking, biking, climbing, and skiing.
The town was named after Malcolm III of Scotland, also known as Malcolm Canmore. In 1884, the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) was built through the Bow Valley, bringing an influx of people and resulting in the establishment of towns such as Banff and Calgary. Canmore was originally incorporated as a town in 1976, and later amalgamated with the Municipality of the Bow River No. 7 to form the Municipality of the District of Canmore in 1995.
The 2001 census recorded a population of 12,288 living in 5,426 households. With a land area of 40.7 square kilometres (15.7 sq mi), it had a population density of 302.9 people per square kilometre (783/sq mi).
Canmore's economy is dominated by tourism and service industries, although it also has a small industrial sector. The town is a gateway to Banff National Park and the Kananaskis Country recreation area. Canmore is home to the Canmore Nordic Centre, a training facility for cross-country skiing and biathlon, which hosted the 1988 Winter Olympics.
Canmore's main street, Bear Street, is lined with shops and restaurants. The town has two museums: the Canmore Museum and Geoscience Centre and the Canmore Cave Museum.
