We covered the writing artificial intelligence (OpenAI) in our article in June - in case you missed it, you can find it here.
As we mentioned in the OpenAI article, there is a new and very promising OpenAI plattform online called DALL-E that could be straight out of a science fiction novel. Image you can tell your robot: Paint a beautiful picture of a sunset in the mountains. Or even better: Create some nice photorealistic images that i can sell as stock-photos. DALL-E can exactly that. Well, if you can sell the pictures online is a story for another article, but let’s see how good DALL-E is and for what it can be used.
In order to use DALL-E you need to sign up first - here: https://labs.openai.com/
It is free to signup and then you get 50 credits for your first month which you can use to generate images. After the first month you will get 15 credits after that every month.
The interface of DALL-E is very simple. There is textfield where you can enter your detailed description and a “Generate” button on the right. If you have no idea what DALL-E should paint for you, there is also the “Surprise me” button, where DALL-E comes up with something original like: a fortune-telling shiba inu reading your fate in a giant hamburger, digital art. You can find results for that request at the bottom of the page.
Once you hit the “Generate” button DALL-E is starting to work. You will see a progress bar and when DALL-E is done it will show you 4 variations (1024x1024 pixel). Each of the pictures you can edit, download or generate further variations of it.
We tried all kinds of different genres and styles on DALL-E to see what it produces and results are…well, let’s say interesting, but for sure not something that can replace a professional graphic artist. But the more detailed information you enter the better the results.
It is for sure far from perfect and we encountered several “glitches” while we tested DALL-E. It would for example insist on adding a bicycle to a woman walking on the the beach. One try was a sunset with two moons and saturn and he only did one moon. And we tried several times to create a badge with the word “SUPERCALIFRAGILISTICEXPALIDOCIOUS” inside, and he managed to never get it right - the closest DALL-E came was “SUUPEEDCLABLABOS”.
It is for sure fun to see what DALL-E can create and play around with it. We will keep an eye on it and cover it again as soon as there are some major improvements, so stay tuned and subscribe so you don’t miss any new articles.
And here is the answer to the question in the last article (can OpenAI get you a job as a programmer and pass a technical interview) is: No.
